THERE have been several research papers in recent Journal of Animal Science publications that readers may find useful and timely. White et al. (2009) reported on the effect of calf location in commercial cattle trucks on the calves' health and early weight gain. Cattle trucks usually contain eight compartments located within the trailer (Figure). Some people have suspected that for long-haul calves -- which sometimes travel more than 1,000 miles --compartment location may affect calf health.
