In this fifth article in a series funded by Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation investigating the benefits precision agriculture is delivering farmers, Kondinin Group engineer Ben White talks to South Australian grain producer Malcolm Sargent, who has been using the technology since 1999. Malcolm feels that while the technology has come a long way, agronomic understanding of all the issues has been a limiting factor in providing most of the potential financial benefits. Saving 50 dollar-80 dollar per hectare in input costs and gaining an additional 10 per cent in yield are some of the benefits Crystal Brook, South Australia, farmer Malcolm Sargent has achieved through global positioning system (GPS) guidance-assisted trials and yield mapping.
