For pure versatility, a handheld UHF radio is hard to beat. They can be worn on a belt or in a pocket and offer reasonable range in a compact package. In rural areas where mobile phone coverage is not always available, a handheld UHF radio is an important safely measure. Kondinin Group examined a range of handheld UHF radios with an output of 1-5 watts. A radio with 5W has a longer range than 1W but is physically larger and require more battery power. There are several handheld UHF units available in the sub-lW category, which were not tested by Kondinin Group. But these are often only useful for close proximity work such as fencing and are often not particularly robust.
