Self-propelled forage harvesters are now bristling with technology designed to improve productivity, running costs and ease of use, reports Peter Hill. Imagine a forage harvester that automatically adjusts its forward speed to ensure consistent crop flow through the chopping cylinder. Or one that can position the spout and then leave it to automatically fill the trailer without further intervention. Picture, too, the advantages of a harvester that will alter chop length according to the maturity of the forage maize it's cutting. Or one that records crop yields to build an accurate tally of dry matter available to feed stock over winter.
