As recessions come and go, food demand in Japan has demonstrated one of world's most inelastic and stable trends. Over recent years, the strengthened yen and a desire for cheaper food alternatives has boosted imports of grains, cereals, feedstuffs and meat. High grain prices have caused tremendous hardship for Japan's livestock producers, resulting in a notably accelerated contraction in some sectors, such as dairy.
