Here at Global Cement, we try to keep our fingers on the international pulse of business, in order to see if the patient is alive or is about to 'peg out.' Things seem to be looking up. However, there's an old story about a haughty Englishman who asks a rural Irishman how to get to the small hamlet of Bally go back wards. "Bejasus," says the Irishman, "to get there I wouldn't start from here." We are where we are and that can't be avoided. So, given the position we find ourselves in, the question that I want to ask you is this: "If you found £1000 (Eurol200, US$1400 or so) blowing down the road in crisp unused bank notes, would you invest it in the global cement industry? And if you would, which company would you invest it in and why?"
