In Britain it was the coldest August for 17 years, so I had plenty of opportunities for reading as the gales howled and the rain slashed down during my family holiday in Norfolk. "The World without us' by Alan Weisman certainly gave me plenty to think about. In it, Weisman imagines a world after we have been magically (or religiously or catastrophically) spirited away, overnight, so that the world is left entirely to its own devices. What would happen? Would the world be 'better' without us?
