The original Holderbank AG was founded in Holderbank, Switzerland in 1912. In 2001 a new name was given to the group,'Holcim'- a contraction of Holderbank' and' ciment'. Holcim is now the second largest cement manufacturer in the world after Lafarge. Holcim's board of directors is currently headed by Markus Akermann, who is joined on the board by a further 11 members from Switzerland, the UK and the Netherlands. It has a total of more than 80,000 employees across its operations in cement, aggregates and ready-mix concrete, in over 2000 locations worldwide. In 2009 Holcim was responsible for a total of 70 cement plants (integrated and grinding) and had a total of 50,335 employees working in its cement operations. Holcim has a cement production capacity of 203Mt/yr, up from 194.4Mt/yr in 2008, but sold 131Mt in 2009 having sold 143Mt during 2008 and a peak of 149.6Mt in sales during 2007.
