RICE: SUPPLY AND DEMAND IN 2010/11

At a record 452.2m. tons, global rice production in 2010/11 is forecast to increase by 12m. (3%), from the previous year. The projection is lifted by almost 4m. tons from before, mostly reflecting a higher official estimate of output in China, despite worries last year about crop losses in southern areas. Based largely on an upward revision to the planted area, milled rice production is now estimated to have increased by 2%, to an all-time peak of 139.2m. tons (see diagram).
