For someone not familiar with a belt manlift, it looks like a throwback to another era. Platforms and handholds are mounted on a continuous belt, much like a "people" version of a bucket elevator, and personnel ride up and down, passing through openings the the floor and gettting off when they reach the floor they want in a multistory structure. In fact, however, belt manlifts remain in use throughout North America, including a variety of grain, feed, and milling operations. They are legal for use everywhere except the City of Los Angeles, CA (which has an ordinance against them). And when used properly by trained personnel, they are quite safe.
