In the last few decades, mass production of components by cold forging has risen dramatically. Cold forging has various advantages compared to other forming processes. It involves little loss of material, improved strength, geometrical precision of components and high production rates. But considerable difficulties can result from the high stresses induced within the workpiece and tooling due to the very large forming loads. Prediction and reduction of these high stresses within the tooling is obviously important. A significant cost advantage can also result from an increase in the tooling's service life. Reducing the stress level in cold forging tooling by modifications to the design has the greatest influence on tool life.
