The HastenedGrowth of Biopesticid:Conventional companies embrace the potential of novel technologies

Whether one prefers the term biocontrols, biopesticides or biorationals, there is no debat-ing that the area of biological control is one of pronounced growth and interest within the crop production and crop protection sectors.To make clear the terminology, "bio-control" is most often used in reference to macro-organisms (insects and mites) used crop protection applications, although some use it to define an all-inclusive class of products that also contains microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoans, viruses, and yeast), and biochemicals (plant growth regulators, insect growth regulators, plant extracts, semiochemi-cals, organic acids, and minerals). The term "biopesticide" includes microorganisms and biochemicals, but doesnot include macro-organisms. "Biorational" is a more descriptive term for this same group of products, one that acknowledges the non-pesticidal nature of many actives regulated as biopesticides. Plant growth regulators are a leading example, as they promote, inhibit or modify the physiological traits of a crop to enhance its productivity - without pesticidal effects.
