ALTHOUGH planting corn in rows narrower than the standard 30 inches has been around for decades, proof that the practice is both agronomically and economically viable has been elusive. But as more varieties become available and technology advances, growers and researchers have begun to take another look. "Yields from past research show that there was no real economic advantage to narrow row planting," says agronomist Dale Hicks of the University of Minnesota. "But with the new varieties on the ciency," Morris says. "I'm definitely sold on the practice."
