The Hong Kong administration is cautiously hopeful that it has beaten the H5N1 virus that has threatened to run riot in the Region, through its slaughter of 1.5 million broilers and a complete ban on imports. The Hong Kong authorities have declared an end to the ban on live chicken imports on 7 February as the 'bird flu' risk appeared to recede. However, despite optimistic reports to the contrary, chicken wasn't on the menu for the Lunar New Year celebrations. The decision came after the Hong Kong government decided that since no new cases of the disease had been reported since the mass slaughter the "high-risk" period appeared to be over.
