Investment in breeding: Pig breeding in Vietnam reflects collaborative efforts to meet increased demand with increased production

A NEWLY-EXPANDED industrial pig breeding farm has been put into operation by the Sai Gon Agricultural Corporation in Ho Chi Minh City. With an investment of 90bn VND and technology imported from Denmark, the farm is seen as the country's most modern breeding operation. Covering around 25ha, the farm can accommodate herds of 18,000 pigs, and is expected to supply 32,000 suckling pigs and 1,500 tonnes of pork annually for the domestic market. The farm is part of local efforts to relocate polluted establishments lying in densely-populated quarters of the city and to modernize technology in livestock breeding with official development assistance (ODA) funding from Denmark, which fosters ODA in 18 programme countries, chosen according to levels of economic and social development, specific needs and absorptive capacity. Danish development assistance is intended to alleviate poverty with respect to gender, environment, democracy and human fights issues. Programme countries in Asia are Bangladesh, Bhutan,Nepal and Vietnam. In the Vietnamese livestock sector, pig raising is a most significant sub-sector, making great contribution to improving nutrition of community, creating jobs and promoting income for farmers. In 1999, live weight output accounted for80per cent of total live weight meat output.
