The FAO statistics for 1985-1997 on pig breeding and pig meat production were compared with own data on the now independent republics of the former USSR and on Russia alone. For the former territory and for Russia respectively, the pig population numbered (in millions) 73.4 and 36.4 in 1980, 78.9 and 40.0 in 1990, and 39.0 and 19.5 in 1997, pig meat production (in million tonnes) 5.2 and 2.6 in 1980, 6.3 and 3.5 in 1990, and 3.4 and 1.9 in 1997, pig meat as a percentage of all meat produced 34.4 and 34.7, 31.5 and 34.9, and 34.5 and 34.7, and pig meat production per capita (kg) 71 and 71 in 1980, 80 and 87 in 1990, and 87 and 97 in 1997. The overall decline (by 51%) in pig numbers comprised the sharpest decline recorded in the Transcaucasian countries (by 73.5%) vs. 35.2% in the Baltic countries.
