They are one of the major suppliers of greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers in Western Canada, but members of the Red Hat Co-operative Ltd, in Redcliff, Alberta won't have much to show for their efforts this fall thanks to a recent hail storm which ripped through the area smashing greenhouses and damaging crops. While the storm, which occurred July 10, only lasted 13 minutes, for growers of the 51 member co-op, it seemed to last forever. "The greenhouses resembled that of Swiss cheese - full of holes,"said Jake Van-derschee, president of Jacobs Greenhouses in Delhi, Ontario, whose company was asked to provide an estimate of the damage done to the greenhouse ranges. "In neighbouring fields, the cabbage leaves had large holes through them. It looked like they had been shot at."
