There must be something in the air, perhaps it is the result of the long winter and sudden spring. But I dont want broodies. I don't want hardly any chicks. Along with much of the rest of the Fancy I am trying to keep my hatching to a sensible minimum this year while we are still under the threat of avian flu. Even on Radio 4's The Archers, broodiness was a serious issue. Birmingham born Hayley has inherited tragically dead but rural Betty's flock of hybrids but, shock, horror, a couple are broody. They peck me when I try to collect the eggs!' says poor Hayley (be glad they are not fierce little bantams oh Hayley - these fly up in your face). She took advice and the general concensus was that they should be killed as they are nonproductive. But soft-hearted Hayley can't do this so it is sensible Jill Archer to the rescue with her 'How to stop a broody being broody' advice. I need some of that advice at the moment as my tried and tested methods just don't appear to be working.
