Every year when spring comes to the mountains of North Carolina, it brings with it the promise of new life. Seeds that have lain dormant under winter snow push up through the mineral-rich soil as white gives way to green and then blossoms in vibrant colors. In the spring of 1912, Yancey County in the western part of the state displays all the bright hues the southern Appalachian Mountains are known for: orange rhododendron, pink azalea, blue hydrangea, and fields of red and yellow wildflowers.
