Does a fortune in double eagle gold coins lie buried somewhere in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana? Civil War records suggest that it does. One winter evening in 1863, a Confederate soldier turns his back on his regiment encamped on Louisiana's Bayou Teche and walks over to the Union side. No doubt this infantryman is sick of the constant hunger, fatigue, dysentery, misery, and the ever present "mud, moss, and mosquitoes" that are part of his daily life as a soldier.
