Kurt Vonnegut was the author of many offbeat novels that were often both fatalistic and fanciful but which also offered insight into the mind of a practical philosopher whose worldview was changed forever by his experiences in WWII, which was hallmarked by his survival of the bombing of Dresden while being held prisoner of war in a disused slaughterhouse. That experience was woven into his most famous novel, Slaughterhouse 5. Like those in most professions, Vonnegut held friendships with other writers including Joseph Heller, another world war veteran who had ironically been a bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps flying missions over Italy, which served as inspiration for Hellers most famous novel Catch-22. Sometime after Hellers passing in 1999, Vonnegut recounted a story about an encounter with Heller at a party in the form of a poem.
