IEA: Marine-Gasoil Demand to Jump in Run-Up to 2015 ECA Mandates

The International Energy Agency (IEA) announced in the February 2014 edition of its monthly Oil Market Report that it’s raising its forecast for gasoil/diesel demand in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations in fourth-quarter (4Q) 2014. Because of the January 1, 2015, deadline by which ships in parts of Europe and all of North America (plus several Caribbean nations) inside “emissions-control areas” (ECAs) must switch to 0.1%-sulfur maximum bunker fuel (or else install scrubbing systems, or switch to liquefied natural gas), that means that demand for low-sulfur gasoil/diesel would jump in several OECD member nations.
