Radiation-induced color centers in phosphogermanate glass-like materials

The effect of germanium oxide on the nomenclature and nature of color centers responsible for the induced adsorption of activated phosphate glass was investigated. The spectra of the gamma-irradiated glass based on La(PO3)(3) with the GeO2 content not exceeding 40 mol % were recorded and analyzed. It was suggested that the existence of an isosbestic point indicated the interaction of two independent subsystems: phosphate and germinate ones. The model composition corresponded to 5GeO(2) center dot 10La(2)O(3) center dot 85P(2)O(5). Partic-ipation of the Eu3+ in the suppression of the induced absorption in the region of 400 nm (25000 cm(-1)), which was due to the [PO3 (2-)] centers, was demonstrated. The spectra of the induced absorption of the glass produced under reductive conditions both the initial ones and the ones containing Tb2O3 were practically identical and demonstrated a lack of the induced absorption in the visible range of the spectrum.
