The first nursing home for elderly people with dementia in a small group, known as "group home" (GH) in Japan, was established in Sweden in 1986. Through the courtesy of Professor Barbro Beck-Friis of Sweden, I have had the opportunity to visit some of the institutions for elderly people and observe the care for senile patients with dementia in Sweden. I would like to introduce some of my observations on the current care situation in Sweden compared with that in Japan and give some personal comments on the state of care in Japan.
