Generally, a differentiation is made between two types of processes in thechemical and pharmaceutical industries, namely between large-scale continuously processes and batch processes. Many continuous production processes have been highly systematically many years ago through the use of process analytics, whereby the focus has mainly been on cost optimisation. Yields are increased here, consumption of resources and the amount of waste are decreased and the expenditure for energy is minimised. As a result, extensive global objectives, such as the protection of the environment and of the global climate are supported. At the same time, the design, control and regulation of large-scale industrial plants are very highly advanced in many cases. As these often employ chemical and physical processes, the theory of which is largely understood well, the planning of new plants is supported by modelling. Quantitatively, continuous production processes account for a large proportion of production in the chemical industry.
