The focus on 90% carbon capture adds costs that will end up stalling commercial deployment of IGCC plants as well as PC plants for needed coal-based generation. Since my return from the 2007 Gasification Technologies Council conference in San Francisco I am still trying to assess how what I saw and heard will impact on the future for coal-based IGCC power generation and gasification projects. Foremost is that CO{sub}2 has become such an "all consuming" issue that we are back to "all talk and no action" for IGCC in the United States and that natural gas fired combined cycle will reign as the bridge technology for power generation while waiting on projects like FutureGen IGCC to show the way forward.
