North America - Companies EnCana to split into separate oil and gas companies

EnCana, the independent Canadian oil and gas producer announced on Sunday that the Calgary-based company has approved plans to split into two separate publicly traded divisions, effective by 2009. The new gas company will be the second the largest North American gas producer and plans to increase annual gas production from 7% to 9%. Encana's current CEO Randy Eresman, will head the gas company tentatively called GasCo but will keep the EnCana name. He told local news: "Companies need to have disciplined focus on their expertise and core strengths in order to achieve full value from their assets, to capture opportunities and to effectively respond to changing markets."
