Wolf Maier was recognised last year as the Young Researcher for 1998 in the Faculty of Science, based on his increasingly voluminous international research output on magmatic sulphide deposits, and has now been promoted to senior lecturer. This year he will be presenting a short course on this subject, as well as continuing with his Bushveld interests. Joining Wolf in his research, and the department as a senior lecturer (from October 1999), is Dr. Chusi Li, well known internationally for his work on the Voisey's Bay nickel deposit, under the auspices of Toronto University and in cooperation with Tony Naldrett. Although he is still getting used to out strange eating habits in Pretoria (boerewors and been whenever possible), Chusi has given major impetus to a newly constituted research group, CER-MOD (Centre for Research on Magmatic Ore Deposits) led by head of department, Sybrand de Waal, and also incorporating Roland Mekle, Sabine Verryn, and another new appointment, Prof. Hennie Theart. This group, which re-establishes the focus of the Pretoria department on the Bushveld Complex as well as on other magmatic systems such as Uitkomst, Noril'sk, Kabanga, Voisey's Bay, Insizwa and O'Kiep, have already successfully garnered new industry-supported projects and post-graduate students.
