摘要

Genetic variation contributes to the ability of humans to adapt biologically to regular, supervised, physical activity (Bouchard & Rankinen, 2001). For some physiological variables, such as 'insulin sensitivity', at least 20% of the population demonstrate an impairment following weeks of supervised aerobic exercise training rather than the expected improvement (Boule et al. 2005). Such variability in physiological adaptation provides an excellent opportunity to examine the relationship between genetic architecture and the scale of physiological change noted in 'outbred' humans (Timmons et al. 2010). Furthermore, the variability encountered clearly has great medical importance, as one would not treat hypertension or insulin resistance by exercise in those subjects for whom exercise training impaired insulin action or did not improve blood pressure.
