smartALERT~(TM):An innovative gas-warning system for leakage detection in industrial commerce and plants

Industrial gas installation safety has achieved an extremely high status in Germany,forming an element of the European-level standard,particularly in the explosion-endangered-zone field.Expanded ranges of application(CHP cogeneration plants,biogas plants,workshops for natural-gas-powered vehicles,etc.)beyond the existing explosion-endangered-zone definitions have,however,also resulted in additional demands for appropriate safety precautions.The use of gas alarms now also makes it possible to detect even the slightest leakage of explosible gas mixtures with certainty and to react appropriately in case of danger.This article examines a gas-sensor-based measuring system functioning on the infrared-absorption principle which meets maximum requirements for reliability and long-term stability.In addition to adherence to EN 50 194,particular importance was also attached during the development phase to adherence to additional gas-industry demands including,in particular,anti-manipulation provisions.
