A 70-year-old Japanese woman was admitted for rectal bleeding and tenesmus. She had no respiratory symptoms or history of rectal trauma and was immuno-competent. Her abdomen was soft and nontender. Laboratory testing revealed mild leukocytosis, the absence of anemia, normal complement levels, and normal liver biochemical test results. The HIV test result was nega-tive.
