EELCO HOOFTMAN of GROSS MAX is widely regarded as one of the few UK-based exponents of contemporary European landscape architecture. He spoke at Palmstead Nurseries 2012 Soft Landscape Workshop, which inspired the Palmstead team to choose 'Native or non-native' for their 2013 workshop (see below). Here, Eelco shares his thoughts on natural selection versus cultural selection and talks about other projects. "The whole of Europe is becoming one urban constellation, and landscape architecture is an urban project. If we talk about survival of the fittest in this landscape, we need to talk about a hero of mine: Darwin. Survival of the fittest is about natural selection but we're really talking about cultural selection. Natural selection is superseded bythis.
