RENAISSANCE AND BAROQUE GARDENS IN FRANCE

HOW DID the Renaissance garden come about? We have to go back some way to find the answer. The Roman armies started to give up their conquered lands and returned to protect Rome, and consequently the gardens of pleasure created by the Romans in England, France, Spain and Germany fell into disrepair. For the next 1,000 years, Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages. Hobhouse says: "Following the fall of the Roman Empire, with much of Europe returning to the wilderness of the Dark Ages, there must have been little, if any, chance to practise gardening for beauty alone." The gardens of France and Italy during the medieval period were behind protective walls - or, in France, moats. Entire villages and towns needed this protection from invaders, but they inadvertently had the effect of stifling the design and expansion of gardens.
