Two significant UK gardens have undergone some major design work over the last decade, involving large sums of money and prestigious designers and architects. Katherine Lambert reports. At first glance, the Cotswold Wildlife Park at thEngland, and the National Botanic Garden deep in South Wa seem miles apart in scale, concept and character. The 140-a Wildlife Park is a family run business set up in 1970 at an ini 40,000; the design and planting has been transformed ove decade by Tim Miles, formerly head gardener at Heligan. Th National Botanic Garden of Wales, on the other hand, was a 21.7m Millennium grant in 1996. It numbers among its or Professor Ghillian Prance of Kew and Robin Herbert of the F secured the Prince of Wales as itspatron, and signed up soi prestigious names in the profession. Zoology may rule the fi the second, but the design history and thinking behind both many things in common - including a commitment to marr scientific study with the pursuit of horticulture.
