Protection of skin grafts to the penile shaft using a novel manipulation of Allevyn~(TM) dressing-Case report of an alkali burn

Burns to the penile shaft are rare. They are usually part of much larger burns, usually from scald or flame .They are usually difficult areas to dress because of skin mobility, the necessity to urinate through the dressing and the tendancy to spontaneously tumesce, shearing off any skin graft or dressing. Scalds are the most common type of perineal burn and can be particularly deep in patients with reduced ability to remove the offending liquid (e.g. elderly, wheelchair bound).We present a case of a delayed presentatlqn of an alkali burn that caused a deep bum that necessitated skin coverage and innovative dressings.Allevyn~(TM) is a cheap, thin, flexible, 'absorbent, waterproof, non-adherent dressing that can be rolled around the penile shaft and stapled to itself into a tubular sheath in which the shaft can be protected until graft take has been achieved.
