Tests on resistance in sweet cherries (Prunus avium L.), Part 6: evaluation of resistance to Cytospora spp. and Pseudomonas spp. at the sweet cherry collection of the Fruit Genebank Dresden-Pillnitz

Using previously developed methodical principles, the collection of sweet cherry cultivars of the Dresden-Pillnitz Fruit Genebank was examined for its resistance to Cytospora (Valsa) and Pseudomonas. Despite considerable variations in the individual results, multiple repetitions enabled a relatively reliable classification of the cultivars into individual resistance groups. Among other cultivars, 'Badeborner', 'Bianca', 'Buttners Rote Knorpel', 'Mona Cherry', 'Nadino' and 'Stella' proved to be especially resistant to Cytospora persoonii. 'Altenburger Melonenkirsche', 'Badeborner', 'Bianca', 'Lambert', 'Nalina', 'Namosa' and 'Querfurter Konigskirsche' were among the cultivars that were especially resistant to Pseudomonas syringae. Only three of the 130 cultivars tested achieved positive results in their resistance evaluation against Cytospora, Pseudomonas and winter frost: 'Badeborner', 'Bianca' and 'Mona Cherry'. We recommend that they be used more for breeding purposes.
