The bus shelter as blank canvas: Creative-minded transit authorities put the arts in play at bus shelters

Cities across the country prove it is possible to incorporate aesthetics and inspired designs into the public environment. In Los Angeles, CA, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) commissions artists to create transportation projects throughout LA County. From bus stops to rail stations, streetscapes to bus interiors, construction fences to poetry works, transit authorities utilize art to create a sense of place and engage transit riders. LA Metro allocates one-half of one percent of rail construction costs to the creation of original art works. It extended the program to include the Metro Orange Line, while several additional bus projects receive funding through grants. For example, the Metro Bus Seat Fabric project received significant Section 5307 implementation funds. Municipal and corporate contributions total more than USD1.5 million.
