Synthesis and characterization of polyschiff base anilides and their metal chelates

2-Hydroxy-4-acryloyloxyacetophenone-N-phenylimine (HAAPI) was synthesized, and homo- and copolymerized with methacrylate (MA) in 2-butanone solution using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator at 65 degrees C. The polymers were characterized by IR and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The percentage of HAAPI present in the copolymers was calculated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The copolymerization reactivity ratios were calculated by the Kelen-Tudos method. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. Cu(II) and Ni(II) chelates of the polymers were prepared. The polychelates were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and conductivity measurements. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
