Consensus criteria for the use of magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer: not ready for routine use.

The current paper by Dickenson et al. [1] summarizes the results of a consensus meeting of 16 European prostate cancer (PCa) specialists on the use of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) with regard to detection, localization, and characterization of PCa. The authors attempted to define appropriate items for standardization of mpMRI related to image sequence parameters and image interpretation and reporting including features of malignancy on individual sequences. Consensus was reached for about 60% of the 520 items concerning conduct, interpretation, and reporting of mpMRI for the detection, localization, and characterization of PCa. The authors conclude that formal validation has to be performed within prospective clinical trials before this imaging technique can be disseminated for routine clinical use.
