Hormones in poultry; weed-killer in bio vegetables and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle. There have been plenty of food scandals in recent years and many consumers are asking themselves: "Is there anything we can eat without worryingwhat's in it?" It's not surprising consumers have become touchy and sceptical. The result is predictable; following each scandal the foods concerned have been avoided. Consumption of beef dropped almost overnight due to the BSE hysteria that broke out inEurope at the end of 2000 and the beginning of 2001. Consumers avoided steak and fillet. Tons of cattle were incinerated, or sent to countries such as North Korea in efforts to stabilize prices.
