Caesium borosilicate glasses with varying amounts of CaO were prepared and their structural aspects investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ~(11)B magic angle spinning-nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) before and after leaching. The chemical durability of the glasses improves significantly as CaO is increased at the expense of B2O3 content in the glass. Based on the chemical analysis of leachate and structural information obtained at the various stages of leaching, the relative stability towards hydrolytic attack of the different structural groups in the empirical model structure has been used to explain observed leaching behaviour.
