Have you ever been to Lloyds Bank in Newton Abbot ? The next time you go in, have a look at the stone carving of a bee hive above the door outside and in the wood panelling on the inside. One member of staff told me that she had worked there for thirty years and had never noticed them. Mention Lloyds Bank and you think of the black horse, but this was not the bank's first motif. The beehive with its connotations of thrift and industry, was used as the original symbol, but in the late 19th century, the beehive symbol was superseded by the black horse when they took over another bank.
