U.S. biopharm firms up R&D spending 35%

ALLENTOWN, Penn--Though most U.S. biopharmaceutical firms ate cash-starved, and though they sense no imminent loosening of the investment community' s purse strings, they continue to commit heavily to research and development (R&D). Indeed, the 191 biopharmaceutical firms included in Bio/Technology's annual survey of R&D spending increased their research expenditures 34,7% in fiscal-year 1994, compared to fiscal-year 1993 (Table 4). Yet this impressive growth is actually a substantial decline, compared to the astronomical 89% jump in R&D outlays recorded for 152 surveyed firms in 1993 and the gigantic 71 % rise in R&D commitments by 109 surveyed firms in 1992.
