Comparison testing of solid lubricants as dispersion, grease, paste and powder

In recent years a variety of nano scaled solid lubricants have been developed that are slowly finding its use in industrial applications. The difficulty in demonstrating a performance advantage of nano scale versus micro scale solid lubricants is caused by comparing appropriate data. Furthermore exhibits the variety of currently used micro scale solid lubricants huge differences in friction and wear behaviour. The aim of this study was to establish a base line for currently used solid lubricants such as Molybdeniumdisulfide, Graphite, Boron Nitride and White Solids. Seven different micro scale solid lubricants have been tested in its powder form, as a dispersion in Polyalphaolefine, as additive in Lithiumhyroxystearate thickened Mineral Oil grease and as a paste using Paraffinic White Oil as a carrier fluid. Data have been generated using tribometers such as Pin on Disc and High Frequency Reciprocating machines and will be compared. Wear track measurements give some indication of working mechanisms, which will be discussed as well.
