The Dynamics of the Ant Community in the Course of Pine- Forest Regeneration after Felling

The dynamics of the ant community was studied in regenerating pine forests from the moment of their felling till the formation of mature 75-year-old forests in the territory of the "Ugra" National Park (Kaluga Province). A total of 19 speeies was recorded. In the first year after felling, the abundance and species richness of ants somewhat decreased. In the second year, the ant abundance exceeded that in old stands. Further, the abundance, species richness, and complexity of multispecific associations increased due to the invasion of thermophilous species, reaching their maximum in 6-25-year-old stands. These indices gradually decreased, down to their minimum in the oldest forests. During all the course of regeneration of pine stands, the species composition of ant communities varies, but no discrete distinctive mullispecific associations can be distinguished. Lasius platythorax participates in all associations, other species vanish in the course of succession and arc replaced by other species of the same genus with a similar ecology (Myrmica ruginodis and M. rubra, or Formica fusca and F. cunicularia); Tetramorium caespitum appears at a certain stage and disappears with the change of conditions. All these species must be evidently regarded as members of a single eoadaptive assemblage, the structure of which gradually modifies in time with serai changes.
