An experiment was carried out during rainy seasons (July-November) of 2003 and 2004 on sandy loam soil to evaluate the effect of different levels and sources of nitrogen on growth and yield of two varieties of Basmati rice (oryza sativa L.) cv Pusa Basmati-1 and Haryana Basmati. The experiment was laid out in 2 x 3 x 3 factorial randomized block design with 18 treatments and three replications. Pusa Basmati-1 was proved to have significantly higher values of growth and yield attributes and resulted in 8% higher grain yield. Nitrogen at 90 kg/ha exhibited higher growth and yield parameters and registered 19 and 43% higher grain yield over 60 kg and 30 kg N/ha respectively. Among the sources urea alone appeared to be more appropriate for 20 and 10% higher grain yield over a source of poultry manure and urea (50%) + poultry manure (50%) respectively. Interaction studies further indicated that variety Pusa Basmati-1 treated with 90 kg N/ha through urea alone was more appropriate combination to realize higher yield from Basmati rice.
