Genetic diversity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) for boro ecology of Terai Region of West Bengal.

An experiment was conducted in West Bengal, India, during boro season of 2004-05 to study performance of different rice genotypes and to identify divergent parcutal groups having suitable parameters for providing essential inputs to boro rice breeding programme. Promising genotypes were raised consisting of two landraces, five released cultivars, eight advanced breeding materials and one local control, and generalized distance was estimated by D2 statistics with clustering followed by Tocher's method. Pooled data of 10 quantitative traits for two years analysed and 6 clusters of genotypes were formed on the basis of D2 statistics. Grain yield, flag leaf length and number of filled grains per panicle along with panicle length and test weight accounted for 77.94% of total divergence. On the basis of D2 analysis, crossing with the genotypes of cluster VI with the genotype of cluster V may be promising for evolving boro rice. Quality rice genotypes may be advocated as parents for crossing with standard boro genotype for development of slender grain quality genotype with high yield.
