Rice cv. NDR 359 plants were supplied with diammonium phosphate or single superphosphate granules or powder applied as basal fertilizer (M1), top dressing (M2), 50% basal + 50% top dressing (M3) and 50% basal + 25% top dressing 25 and 50 days after transplanting (M4) in a field experiment conducted in Uttar Pradesh, India. Phosphorus application increased dry matter accumulation during the different crop growth stages, leaf area index, yield and yield components and protein content regardless of the source and method of application. Diammonium phosphate and single superphosphate granules applied as M1 or M3 were at par with each other in performance and were better than single superphosphate powder, and M2 and M4 applications. Grain yield was highest when the crop was supplied with diammonium phosphate as a basal fertilizer..
