A field experiment was conducted for 2 years in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India, to study the effects of supplemental irrigation in sustaining the productivity of rainfed wheat (Triticum aestivum). The application of pre-sowing and post-sowing irrigation resulted in mean grain yields of 30.3 and 24.4 quintal/ha, which were significantly higher than the yield under no irrigation (rainfed; 18.1 quintal/ha) on sandy loam soil. The corresponding yields were 50.2 and 43.3 quintal/ha over no irrigation (35.8 quintal/ha) on silt loam soil. The application of pre-sowing irrigation gave the highest net returns of 6006 and 15 883 rupees/ha on sandy loam and silt loam soils, respectively. The total water use and water use efficiency were considerably higher with pre-sowing irrigation compared to post-sowing irrigation and no irrigation. [1.0 quintal=100 kg]..
