POSCO chooses Danieli for partnership in the challenge to produce 1.8-Mtpy with 1 strand thin slab caster

On September 20, 2007, POSGO and Danieli reached an agreement for the joint development program of a new generation of plant for the production of flat products, to be installed at POSCO's Gwangyang Works, Korea. In 1996, POSCO installed an ISP mini mill at Gwangyang, and has had more than 10 years of operating experience and powerful research capability. After many years of trials and developments, POSCO finally decided to completely revamp the existing casting and rolling facilities, both to overcome the limitations of the original plant and to develop a revolutionary technology and layout, conceived for the direct connection of Casting and Rolling facilities. In order to reach this ambitious goal, POSCO selected Danieli as its technological partner, thanks to its recognized experience in design for highspeed thin slab casters and hot strip mill facilities, as well as in process automation. The original plant was composed of two single-strand thin slab casters connected to two roughing stands for each line, and was supplied by DEMAG. After the roughing stands, slabs for each strand were coiled and then conveyed to a single finishing mill line.
